Nice Nice – Extra Wow LP
From 2007 – 2009 we worked closely with Jason and Mark of Nice Nice in an effort to visualize their brand for their debut on Warp Records. During those 2 years we came up with a range of different solutions for the band, and finally settled on one deconstructed, bold solution. The concept which is a gradual reconstruction of a deconstructed typographic image, would span across three album releases – 2 EPs and 1 Full Length LP. The first EP release, “One Hit” brings the most deconstructed image. Next, “See Waves” the release featured the type forming together, becoming somewhat legible. And then finally, with the release of the full length LP, “Extra Wow” we realize the entirety of the final typographic form.
We approached the process much like the band approaches their music. We began with a very traditional & analogous approach, and then moved into a colorful and glitched digital context. The basic typographic form was derived from scanned type found from an old book which we manually deconstructed and set by hand. The background consisted of many experiments including, staining paper, watercolor, painting, and carving up a colored pencil into tiny colorful crumbs. We brought all of these experiments into the digital world, merging, distorting, and glitching them until we achieved the final solution.
